Foundation Half Double Crochet (FHDC) Tutorial

Posted by Jorie Jones on

The use of a foundation chain instead of a your traditional crochet chain not only provides a cleaner finished look, it also provides more stretch than a standard chain.

Step 1

Begin with a standard slip knot on your hook

Step 2

Chain 2

Step 3

Yarn over and insert hook into first chain (2nd chain from hook)

Step 4

Yarn over and pull loop through FIRST loop on hook

Step 5

Yarn over and pull loop through FIRST loop on hook (just like we did on Step Four)

Step 6

Yarn over and pull loop through all three loops on hook; FHDC made

Step 7

Yarn over and insert hook through stitch closest to the slip knot; this stitch is underneath the FHDC just made. Be sure to not insert hook into one of the three loops that make up the FHDC

Step 8

Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook)

Step 9

Yarn over and pull up loop through FIRST loop on the hook only (this is what creates the stitch that the next FHDC is placed in each time)

Step 10

Yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook; FHDC made

Continue repeating Steps 7 - 10 until you have the number of FHDC your pattern calls for
